Many people have luminaries here too; it seems that most of them are for charitable events. Ronald MacDonald House sells luminary kits to make 6 luminaries; I know some night walks/races have luminaries around the track.
I grew up with the luminarias so they just scream “holiday time” to me. 🙂 My husband is from Connecticut, so him notsomuch. He thinks they are strange. I’m surprised they have made their way that far east as your state. I know the Spanish brought them here. We also used to sometimes make them out of tin cans, that had come with soup or veggies or whatever. You take a nail and a hammer and nail holes into the can and voila, you have lanterns! And you can punch designs into them so I kind of favored the cans rather than the bags.
I used to have so much fun making tin can luminaries. I lived in Connecticut until I was 13 and I don’t remember them being very popular. I made mine after we moved to Florida where they used to be very common but have sinces died out.
I love the idea of the Luminaries they look so effective. I don`t understand what you mean about Santa and being an adult , are you trying to say that he is not real ? ;-] I believe and possibly need to have a conversation about the Easter bunny too.

The postcard I sent is of one of the bigger displays we have in town. I always liked the warm look they give. They are so huge here that businesses buy electric versions (with plastic instead of paper) and line the tops of their buildings with them this time of year. (Most buildings here have flat roofs).
Down here in Florida the paper bags with tea candles were popular for Halloween many years ago but I haven’t seen them for a long time. For Halloween we would draw jack o’lantern faces on them with sharpies.

I love the idea of luminarias… it’s definitely not a thing here, but I think they look lovely.
